The authors propose a new type of adaptive centre weighted median filter for image processing. It is designed to reduce impulsive noise in an image without distorting details. The weights of the filter are chosen using a controller based on a particular type of neural network. The authors show how the weights can be optimised through a learning process. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the new filter.
