The authors use the local orthogonal decomposition technique to derive a generalized finite element method (GFEM) for linear and semilinear parabolic equations with spatial multiscale coefficients. The paper is organised as follows: Section 1 is an introduction. In Section 2 the problem formulation and the assumptions needed to achieve sufficient regularity of the solution are described. In Section 3 the numerical approximation is given and the resulting GFEM is presented. In Section 4 error bounds are proved and in Section 5 the results are extended to semilinear parabolic equations. Finally, in Section 6 some numerical examples are presented.
