The notion of amenability for Banach algebras was introduced by \textit{B. E. Johnson} [Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 127, 96 p. (1972; Zbl 0256.18014)]. Other related homological notions such as biprojectivity and biflatness was introduced by \textit{A. Ya. Khelemskij} [The hohomology of Banach and topological algebras. Transl. from the Russian by Alan West. Dordrecht etc.: Kluwer Academic Publishers (1989; Zbl 0695.46033)]. Recently the weaker version of approximate amenabilty was introduced by \textit{F. Ghahramani} and \textit{R. J. Loy} [J. Funct. Anal. 208, No. 1, 229--260 (2004; Zbl 1045.46029)]. The authors of the current paper investigate approximate biprojectivity of semigroup algebras. They show that for a discrete semigroup \(S\) with a left or right unit, approximate biprojectivity of \(\ell^1(S)\) implies that \(S\) is finite. When \(S\) is a uniformly locally finite inverse semigroup, they show that the notions of approximate biprojectivity and biprojectivity are equivalent for \(\ell^1(S)\).
