In the paper under review the author focuses on one of the aspects of the Murthy's Conjecture [\textit{A. V. Geramita} (ed.), Conference on commutative algebra - 1975. Ontario, Canada: Queen's University (1975; Zbl 0317.00002)]. Suppose \(A = k[X_1,X_2, \dots,X_n]\) is a polynomial ring over a field \(k\). Then, for any ideal \(I\) in \(A\), the conjecture states that \(\mu(I) = \mu(I/I^2)\), where \(\mu\) denotes the minimal number of generators. Fasel recently confirmed this conjecturefor infinite perfect fields \(k\) with \(1/2 \in k\) in his much celebrated paper [Ann. Math. (2) 184, No. 1, 315--331 (2016; Zbl 1372.13014)], the author of the current work shows that if \(R\) is a regular ring containing an infinite field \(k\), with \(1/2 \in k\), and if \(R\) is smooth and essentially finite over \(k\) or \(k\) is perfect, then for the polynomial ring \(A = R[X]\) and an ideal \(I\) in \(A\) that contains a monic polynomial, \(\mu(I) = \mu(I/I^22)\). Murthy's Conjecture for infinite fields containing \(1/2\) then follows, as explained in the paper. Some additional results that relate to the matter investigated are also discussed.
