Let \(X\) be a separated Noetherian scheme. The category of quasi-coherent sheaves on \(X\) may or may not have enough projectives, but in any case there is a mock homotopy category of projectives \(K_m(\mathrm{Proj}\, X)\) which behaves like a homotopy category of projectives and is equivalent to that category in the case that \(X\) is affine. In this paper the author shows that \(K_m(\mathrm{Proj}\, X)\) can be constructed as the homotopy category for an abelian model structure on the category of chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves. The author also uses this approach to construct the recollement relating \(K_m(\mathrm{Proj}\, X)\) to the analogous mock projective stable category and the usual derived category. Similar recollements are also constructed from more general complete hereditary cotorsion pairs in Grothendieck categories.
