The paper under review establishes two roughly similar lower bounds for \(L\)-functions from the Selberg class, under slightly different technical assumptions. However, the authors give two totally different proofs. The first proof makes use of the so-called ``resonance method'', which was introduced by \textit{K. Soundararajan} [Math. Ann. 342, No. 2, 467--486 (2008; Zbl 1186.11049)] (see also the first author's recent paper [Math. Ann. 365, No. 1--2, 473--496 (2016; Zbl 1342.11071)]). The second proof uses the methods from inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation, which resemble the homogeneous Diophantine approximation methods used by \textit{H. L. Montgomery} for the Riemann zeta function [Comment. Math. Helv. 52, 511--518 (1977; Zbl 0373.10024)]. The lower bounds obtained in this paper improve earlier results due to the second author and \textit{J. Steuding} [Int. J. Number Theory 9, No. 5, 1113--1124 (2013; Zbl 1325.11092)]. It is remarkable that these two different methods lead to very similar lower bounds, and in both cases it seems very difficult to sharpen the results further. Moreover, the authors also prove upper bounds for \(L\)-functions in the Selberg class and give a further application of a theorem due to \textit{Y.-G. Chen} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 61, No. 3, 691--705 (2000; Zbl 0954.11023)] with the Diophantine approximation method.
