In the article under review, the authors derive a quantitative uniqueness estimate, the three-region inequality for the second order elliptic equation \[ \nabla\cdot (A\nabla v)=0 \text{ in } \Omega, \] where \(\Omega\) is a bounded open subset in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), \(A\) has a discontinuity across a \(C^2\) closed hypersurface and is Lipschitz away from the hypersurface. The derivation of the inequality relies on a Carleman estimate established in their previous work [\textit{M. Di Cristo} and the authors, ``Carleman estimate for second order elliptic equations with Lipschitz leading coefficients and jumps at an interface'', J. Math. Pures Appl. (to appear)]. Later on the authors apply the three-region inequality to study the size estimate problem with one boundary measurement (see for example [\textit{G. Alessandrini} et al., Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 128, No. 1, 53--64 (2000; Zbl 0944.35108)], where such type of problem was studied).
