This paper is interested in the application of finite difference schemes forthe numerical solution of one-dimensional time distributed-order fractional wave equations. Two finite difference schemes are derived, their unconditional stability is shown and it is proven that the schemes are convergent in the \(L_\infty\) norm with the convergence orders \(O(\tau^2 + h^2 + \Delta \gamma^2)\) and \(O(\tau^2 + h^4 + \Delta \gamma^4)\), where the the step sizes in time, space, and distributed order are denoted by \(\tau\), \(h\) and \(\Delta \gamma\), respectively. The numerical method is applied to the solution of a numerical example and the convergence rates confirms the theoretical found convergence rates.
