Let \(I(V,B)\) be the orthogonal or symplectic group of a finite-dimensional vector space \(V\) over an algebraically closed field \(\mathbb{F}\), where \(B\) is a nondegenerate symmetric or symplectic bilinear form. Using the Jacobson-Morozov lemma the author gives a new proof of the well-known theorem: Two isometries are conjugate in \(I(V,B)\) if and only if they have the same elementary divisors.
