The authors explore the Diophantine properties of probability measures invariant under the Gauss map. They prove that every such measure which has a finite Lyapunov exponent is extremal, i.e., it gives zero measure to the set of very well approximable numbers. They also give some examples where the Lyapunov exponent is infinite and the invariant measure is not extremal. Moreover, they construct a family of Ahlfors regular measures and prove a Khinchine-type theorem for these measures, and so give an answer in the negative to a question about absolutely decaying measures proposed by \textit{D. Y. Kleinbock} et al. [Math., New Ser. 10, No. 4, 479--523 (2004; Zbl 1130.11039)].
