A Banach space \(X\) has the {\textit{weak fixed point property}} if every nonexpansive self-mapping of a weakly compact convex subset of \(X\) has a fixed point. In [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 20, No. 7, 849--853 (1993; Zbl 0776.47028)], the authors introduced the notion of orthogonal convexity, a geometric property of Banach spaces that implies the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. Let \(J\) be James' quasi-reflexive space endowed with the classical norm that makes \(J\) isometric to \(J^{**}\). In the article under review, the authors prove that any Banach space that is close to \(J\) in terms of Banach-Mazur distance is orthogonally convex and thus has the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings.
