For a singular \(M\)-matrix \(A\) necessary and sufficient conditions are given so that \(A\) has an LU factorization with two singular factors. Moreover the block LU factorization of an \(M\)-matrix is considered, where both \(L\) and \(U\) are block \(M\)-matrices with as few nonzero entries in their otherwise zero triangles as possible.
