It is proved that the functional equation \[ A\varphi\circ g=B\varphi\circ h+D\varphi \] has a solution \(\varphi:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) depending on an arbitrary function and a construction of all solutions of the equation is given. [The Schilling equation is of the form \[ 4qf(qx)= f(x+1)+ f(x-1)+ 2f(x)]. \]
