The author gives some results for the world-volume theories of \(D\)-branes in curved space. His approach is a purely mathematical one: namely, given a particular manifold with metric \({\mathcal M}\), he describes a class of \(U(N)\) gauge theories with classical moduli space \({\mathcal M}^N/S_N\), such that the small fluctuations have the expected masses of strings stretched between branes. This approach defines an interesting noncommutative analogue of Riemannian geometry. The author shows that in the simplest non-trivial case of a curved target space having one complex dimension the constraints have a unique solution, determining the terms in the action with up to two commutators. Finally, a coordinate-free definition of the algebra of gauge-invariant functions on the \(D\)-brane configuration space is given.
