Let \(\mathfrak R\) be the integral polynomial ring in countably many variables, one for each isomorphism type of finite simple groups. The author attaches to each finite group \(G\) polynomials in \(\mathfrak R\) counting the composition factors of subgroups of \(G\) (with signs). Given a prime ideal \(\mathfrak J\) of \(\mathfrak R\), these polynomials define a class of finite groups called \(\mathfrak J\)-groups. Every finite group has a unique (up to isomorphism) largest factor group which is a \(\mathfrak J\)-group, and the nilpotent \(\mathfrak J\)-groups can be described explicitly.
