A linear compact operator \(P\) on a Hilbert space \(H\) is called of Schatten class \(S_r(H)\), \(0<r<\infty\), if \[ \sum^\infty_{n=1} (s_n(P))^r< \infty, \] where \(s_n(P)\) denote the singular values of \(P\). Recently, the case of a pseudo-differential operator \(P\) was considered for general classes in \(\mathbb{R}^d\), see for example \textit{E. Buzano} and \textit{J. Toft} [J. Funct. Anal. 259, No. 12, 3080--3114 (2010; Zbl 1210.47072)]. In the present paper the authors address pseudo-differential operators on a compact topological group \(G\), as defined by the second author and \textit{V. Turunen} [Pseudo-differential operators and symmetries. Background analysis and advanced topics. Basel: Birkhäuser (2010; Zbl 1193.35261)]. Precise conditions for the validity of the Schatten property on \(H=L^2(G)\) are given in terms of the symbol of \(P\). A trace formula is derived as well for operators in \(S_1(L^2(G))\). Interesting applications concern negative powers of sum-of-squares operators, and pseudo-differential operators on \(G=\mathrm{SU}(2)\) and \(G=\mathrm{SO}(3)\).
