In this paper, the authors study essentially derivations on finite group algebras. They show that when $K$ is an algebraic extension of a prime field, all derivations of a $K$-algebra are $K$-derivations. For a map $f$ defined from $S$ to $RG$, where $R$ is commutative, $S$ is a set of generators of group $G$, the authors provide necessary and sufficient conditions to extend the map $f$ to an $R$-derivation of $RG$. These above results are used in the sequel of the paper to characterize derivations of modular (nonsemisimple) group algebra; to determine all derivations in the commutative case, with positive characteristic, and to classify derivations and inner derivations of finite dihedral group algebra of characteristic $2$. Additionally, they show that for a group algebra $KG$, where $K$ and $G$ are finite, there exists an algebra $A$ containing $KG$ such that all derivations of $KG$ are inner in $A$. Finally, the extended binary Golay code of length $24$ and the extended binary quadratic residue code of length $48$ are presented as images of group algebras.
