The authors develop a micromechanical model that can account for the influence of porosity, grain size and multiphase structure on the compressive yield strength of nanocrystalline ceramic. The theory is applied to study the characteristics of compressive yield strength of a nano-grained titanium oxide composite as its grain size decreases. The existence of a critical grain size below which the compressive yield strength begins to decrease has been found.
