Sums of squares and the fields \(\mathbb{Q}_{A_ n}\) (Q1895558)

Let \(G\) be a finite group and let \(\mathbb{Q}_G=\mathbb{Q} (\{\chi (G):\chi \in \text{Irr}(G)\})\). The authors prove that if \(n > 24\), then \(\mathbb{Q}_{A_n}=\mathbb{Q} (\{\sqrt {p^*}:p\) is an odd prime \(\leq n\), \(p \neq n - 2\})\) where \(p^* =p\) if \(p \equiv 1\pmod 4\) and \(p^*=-p\) if \(p\equiv 3\pmod 4\).
