    The Laguerre function \({\mathcal L}^\alpha_n(x)\), \(\alpha> -1\), is defined by \[ {\mathcal L}^\alpha_n(x)= \tau^\alpha_n L^\alpha_n(x) e^{-x/2} x^{\alpha/2}, \] where \(\tau^\alpha_n= (\Gamma(n+ 1)/\Gamma(n+ \alpha+ 1))^{1/2}\) and \(L^\alpha_n(x)= (n!)^{-1} x^{-\alpha} e^x(d/dx)^n\{x^{n+ \alpha} e^{-x}\}\) is the Laguerre polynomial of degree \(n\) and of order \(\alpha\). Then \(\{{\mathcal L}^\alpha_n\}^\infty_{n= 0}\) is a complete orthonormal system on the interval \([0,\infty)\) with respect to \(dx\). We have the formal expansion \(f(x)\sim \sum^\infty_{n= 0} c^\alpha_n(f){\mathcal L}^\alpha_n(x)\) of a function \(f(x)\) on \([0,\infty)\), where \(c^\alpha_n(f)= \int^\infty_0{\mathcal L}^\alpha_n(x) f(x) dx\) is the \(n\)th Fourier-Laguerre coefficient. The aim of this paper is to extend the Hardy inequality of the Laguerre expansions to \(H^p(\mathbb{R})\) with \(p\) smaller than one by estimating the derivatives of \({\mathcal L}^\alpha_n(x)\) precisely. Let \(\alpha\geq 0\). Suppose \(\alpha/2\neq\) integer and \((\alpha/2+ 1)^{-1}< p\leq 1\). Then for \(f\in H^p(\mathbb{R})\) supported in \([0,\infty)\), the Fourier-Laguerre coefficients \(c^\alpha_n(f)\) are well-defined and satisfy \[ \sum^\infty_{n= 0} {|c^\alpha_n(f)|^p\over (n+1)^{2- p}}\leq C_\alpha\|f\|^p_{H^p(\mathbb{R})} \] with some constant \(C_\alpha\) independent of \(f\). If \(\alpha/2= 0,1,2,\dots\), then the above statement holds for each \(p\) with \(0< p\leq 1\).
