The authors introduce the notion of bounded approximate \(\phi\)-contractibility of a Banach algebra \(A\) (here \(\phi\) is a character of \(A\)). They provide several equivalent conditions for a Banach algebra to be boundedly approximately \(\phi\)-contractible (boundedly approximately character contractible), using nets or the properties of the ideal \(\ker\phi\). They also give some conditions which follow from, or from which follows, the bounded approximate \(\phi\)-contractibility of a Banach algebra. They also move to \(l^p\)-direct sums of Banach algebras and study their bounded approximate \(\phi\)-contractibility (bounded approximate character contractibility) through the bounded approximate \(\phi\)-contractibility (bounded approximate character contactibility, respectively) of their summands. In the last section, they study some specific examples, especially group algebras over a locally compact group.
