In this technical paper, the author offers a spectral flow explanation of the \(\bmod:\mathbb{Z}\) term in an embedding formula for the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer reduced eta invariant exhibited by \textit{J.-M. Bismut} and \textit{W. Zhang} [Math. Ann. 295, No. 4, 661--684 (1993; Zbl 0795.57010)]. The original Bismut-Zhang embedding formula is then generalized to the equivariant family case as well, and the spectral flow in this case is replaced with the equivariant Chern character of a certain equivariant Dai-Zhang higher spectral flow.
