Let $A$ be an abelian variety with an action of a finite group $G$. The action induces a homomorphism of $\mathbb{Q}$-algebras $\rho :\mathbb{Q}[G]\rightarrow\mathrm{End}_{\mathbb{Q}}(A)$ of the group algebra of $G$ to the endomorphism algebra of $A$. The isotypical decomposition of $A$ is constructed from a decomposition of $1\in\mathbb{Q}[G]$ into a sum $1=e_1+\cdots +e_r$ of central idempotents and associating abelian subvarieties $im(n_i\rho(e_i))$ for an appropriate integer $n_i$. When $G$ is a cyclic group $\langle\alpha\rangle$, Roan found another isogeny decomposition, which used the analytic representaiton of $\alpha$. The main purpose of the present paper is to show that both decompositions essentially agree. Moreover the authors generalize in a sense this result to abelian varieties with action of an arbitrary finite abelian group. Editorial remark: An early version of this article was inadvertently published before all the revisions had been completed and then retracted [\url{doi:10.1007/s00013-018-1244-3}]. This article is the final peer reviewed version.
