Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional vector space over a field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic not 2, equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric or alternating bilinear form $b$. \par Provided that the cardinality of the field $\mathbb{F}$ is large enough with respect to the Witt index of $b$, the author determines the maximal possible dimension for a linear subspace of $b$-alternating (respectively, $b$-symmetric) nilpotent endomorphisms of $V$. \par The author investigates questions connected to the traditional Gerstenhaber problem: what is the maximal possible dimension for a nilpotent linear subspace of $\mathrm{End}(V)$? What are the spaces with the maximal possible dimension? For Part I see [the author, ibid. 567, 263--298 (2019; Zbl 1415.15018)].
