The author provides very explicit necessary and sufficient conditions on a morphism of Hopf algebroids to induce an affine morphism on the associated (algebraic) stacks. Let us formulate the special case of a morphism to the terminal stack (Theorem 1.1): Let \((X_0,X_1)\) be a groupoid-object in affine schemes, \(\overline{X}\) the coequalizer of its source and target morphism computed in the category of affine schemes and \({\mathfrak Z}\) the stack associated with \((X_0,X_1)\). There are canonical morphisms \[ \begin{aligned} \alpha:{\mathfrak Z} &\to \overline{X}\\ \beta: X_0 &\to \overline{X} \text{and} \gamma: X_1 &\to X_0\times_{\overline{X}}X_0.\end{aligned} \] In this situation, the following are equivalent: \(\bullet\) The stack \({\mathfrak Z}\) is an affine scheme. \(\bullet\) The morphism \(\alpha\) is an isomorphism. \(\bullet\) The morphism \(\beta\) is an epimorphism of flat sheaves and \(\gamma\) is an isomorphism.
