The authors compare the error between the global solutions and certain local solutions computed by minimizing over small subintervals that contain only a few data points. In particular, they show that the error decreases exponentially as the number of data points increases. By piecing together these locally defined splines, one can obtain a very good continuous approximation of the global spline. Also, several numerical examples are given.
