Suppose we work over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p\). Let \(\pi:X \rightarrow C\) be an elliptic surface, such that the \(j\)-invariant of the fibers is constant and the general fiber is a supersingular elliptic curve. In the paper under review it is proven that \(p^2\) does not divide the multiplicity of any fiber of \(\pi\), assuming certain restrictions on the numerical invariants of \(X\). This is an extension of a result by the author [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 40, 185--201 (2000; Zbl 0970.14020)] for the case \(C=\mathbb P^1\). The main result implies several results on the structure of so-called false elliptic surfaces.
