This is a wide ranging survey of recent works on Fermat's Last Theorem, consecutive powers, Fermat quotients, and powerful numbers. A great number of results and conjectures are given, and the relations between them are explained. Many of these would imply that the first case of Fermat's Last Theorem holds for infinitely many primes, a result obtained by \textit{L. M. Adleman}, \textit{É. Fouvry} and the reviewer [Invent. Math. 79, 409--416 (1985; Zbl 0557.10034) and ibid. 79, 383--407 (1985; Zbl 0557.10035)] by quite different methods.
