At first, the renormalization group method was employed when studying the asymptotic behavior of the Green functions in quantum electrodynamics. In the present paper, the author develops a rather new RG method in order to calculate functional integrals of small perturbations of Gaussian fields. The simple model he uses for demonstration is the classical dipole gas on the lattice, while his method is based on conditional expectations and harmonic extensions. It also uses the Poisson kernel to smooth the Gaussian field. The RG approach to this model originated from works by \textit{K. Gawȩdzki} and \textit{A. Kupiainen} [``A rigorous block spin approach to massless lattice theories'', Commun. Math. Phys. 77, No. 1, 31--64 (1980; \url{doi:10.1007/BF01205038}); ``Block spin renormalization group for dipole gas and \((\nabla\varphi)^4\)'', Ann. Phys. 147, No. 1, 198--243 (1983; \url{doi:10.1016/0003-4916(83)90071-4})]. The author shows that the scaling limit of the generation function with smooth test functions is the generating function of the Gaussian free field. One may regard the present method as a variation of the method applied in many articles by Brydges et al. The author handles the RG problem with wide knowledge and great care.
