\noindent Let \(f:\mathbb{R} \to\mathbb{R}\) be a given function. To \(f\) one can associate the nonlinear composition (superposition) operator \(T_f: g \mapsto f \circ g\). Here, \(g\) belongs to some Besov space \(B^s_{p,q} ({\mathbb R})\). Let \(s,p\) and \(q\) be fixed. Then the author studies the following problem: characterize the set of all functions \(f\) such that the operator \(T_f\) maps \(B^s_{p,q} ({\mathbb R})\) into itself. In the case \( 1 <p<\infty\), \(p \leq q \leq \infty\) and \(s> 1+ 1/p\), the author has found the answer. The corresponding set consists of all functions \(f\) satisfying \(f(0)=0\) and \(f\in B^{s,\ell oc}_{p,q} ({\mathbb R})\). It is known that for \(0 <s< 1+1/p\) the answer is different. In this respect, the restrictions of the main theorem are natural. However, the restriction \(p \leq q\) seems to depend on the method of proof.
