A \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) (a locally compact group \(G\), respectively) is called exact if the operation of taking the spatial tensor product with \(A\) (reduced crossed product by \(G\), respectively) preserves short exact sequences of \(C^*\)-algebras. These notions appeared in \textit{E. Kirchberg} [J. Oper. Theory, 10, 3-8 (1983; Zbl 0543.46035)] and \textit{E. Kirchberg} and \textit{S. Wassermann} [Math. Ann. 315, No. 2, 169-203 (1999; Zbl 0946.46054)], respectively. For instance, nuclear \(C^*\)-algebras (free groups, resp.) are exact. It is known that a discrete group \(G\) is exact if and only if its reduced \(C^*\)-algebra \(C_r^*(G)\) is an exact \(C^*\)-algebra (cf. Theorem 5.2 of \textit{E. Kirchberg} and \textit{S. Wassermann} [loc. cit.]). In the paper under review, the author generalizes this result to the context of Fell bundles as follows: A discrete group \(G\) is exact if and only if for every Fell bundle \({\mathcal B}\) over \(G\) and every ideal \({\mathcal J}\) of \({\mathcal B}\) one has the exactness of the sequence \(0 \rightarrow C_r^*({\mathcal J})\rightarrow C_r^*({\mathcal B})\rightarrow C_r^*({\mathcal B}/{\mathcal J})\rightarrow 0\) of reduced cross-sectional \(C^*\)-algebras which is obtained from the exact sequence \(0 \rightarrow C^*({\mathcal J})\rightarrow C^*({\mathcal B})\rightarrow C^*({\mathcal B}/{\mathcal J})\rightarrow 0\) of full cross-sectional \(C^*\)-algebras (for more details on reduced cross-sectional \(C^*\)-algebras, see \textit{R. Exel} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 492, 41-73 (1997; Zbl 0881.46046)]).
