An additive map \(D\) of an associative ring \(R\) is a left Jordan derivation on a Lie ideal \(U\) of \(R\) if \(D(x^2)=2xD(x)\) for all \(x\in U\). The authors prove that when \(R\) is prime, \(\text{char }R\neq 2\), \(u^2\in U\) for all \(u\in U\), and \(D\) is a left Jordan derivation on \(U\), then either \(D(U)=0\) or \(U\) is central in \(R\). In the latter case the authors fail to observe that \(R\) must be commutative since \(2U\) is a nonzero ideal of \(R\).
