The authors study a strictly hyperbolic \(n\times n\) system of conservation laws \[ {\partial u\over\partial t}+{\partial f(u)\over\partial x}=0, \quad u\in\Omega, \] where the region \(\Omega\) is a disjoint union of two phases \(\Omega_0\) and \(\Omega_1\). They introduce notions of the admissible solution and the phase boundary. Assuming existence of the special Riemann solution with left-sonic phase boundary the authors prove existence of an admissible global solution to the Cauchy problem under small perturbation of the initial Riemann data. Applications to Chapman-Jouguet detonations, liquid-vapor transition and elastodynamics are also considered.
