It is shown that the second order elliptic obstacle boundary value problems can be studied by a class of variational inequalities. This alternative formulation is used to derive the error estimate for the finite element approximations of these obstacle problems. Some numerical realisation of these problems is also discussed. Several examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of these numerical schemes. It is the first time that an example with corner singularity is discussed. This paper is very well written and is very interesting from both theoretical and computational point of view.
