Integral equations on the half-line with a kernel depending on the difference of the arguments were studied by Krein, and the problem was successively generalized in various cases. Integral operators with difference kernels are very useful in the study of numerous homogeneous processes. In the first section of this paper, the problem is introduced, and in the second section, using classical results on semiseparable operators, explicit inversion formulas for a subclass of operators with \(D\)-difference kernels (where \(D\) is a fixed diagonal matrix) are obtained. Operator identities play an important role in the study of structured operators. Various identities for operators with \(D\)-difference kernels are discussed in the third section. The inverse problem is the problem to recover a canonical system from the Weyl function. In the construction of solutions of an inverse problem for some subclasses of canonical systems, the operators with \(D\)-difference kernels have proved to be very useful. This problem is extensively treated in the fourth section, where, as an application, an inverse problem for a subclass of canonical systems in terms of Weyl functions is explicitly solved.
