Let \(k\) be a number field. Denote by \(\mathbb A\) the adele ring of \(k\). Let \(G\) be a reductive group defined over \(k\) (for our purpose, we can assume that \(G\) is semi simple). The representation of \(G(\mathbb A)\) on the space of automorphic forms \(L^2(G(k)\backslash G(\mathbb A))\) has discrete part (generated by irreducible subrepresentations), which contains the cuspidal part of the representation (this part is singled out by a condition of vanishing of some integrals, which generalizes the condition of cuspidality from the classical modular forms case). J. G. Arthur's work on the trace formula motivated him to formulate a series of conjectures regarding description of the discrete part of the representation on the space of automorphic forms. These conjectures do not say when the representations should belong to the discrete non-cuspidal part of the representation. The main aim if the paper under the review, is to conjecture this for the case of classical groups, and to give some support for it. In the case of classical groups, a geometry enters the description of \(L\)-groups, which is then used in the formulation of the conjectures.
