The paper is devoted to ways of encoding mathematics in digital form. The potential of various types of digital edition for enhancing scholarly work is illustrated. Advantages and disadvantages of the move from print to electronic publishing for scholarly editions, especially those with significant mathematical content, are discussed. Furthermore, three case studies are provided: the ``Leibniz Edition'', the ``Newton Project'' and the ``Harriot Online Project''.
