The authors study harmonic analysis in the \(L^1\)-algebra of matrix valued measurable functions on a locally compact group, an area of research initiated by \textit{C.-H. Chu} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 552, 15--52 (2002; Zbl 1011.31004)]. (The notion of the Bochner $L_1$-space is of course much older; see the 1977 monograph ``Vector measures'' by \textit{J.~Diestel} and \textit{J.~J. Uhl jun.} [Vector measures. American Mathematical Society (AMS), Providence, RI (1977; Zbl 0369.46039)] for references.) The paper includes extensions of some of the classical results of harmonic analysis, including Bochner's theorem, to the vector valued setting.
