In this expository paper, the author makes an introduction to the theory of formal power series from an algebraic point of view. He puts together many results in an unique treatment. No huge knowledge is required to understand the content. Let's describe the body of the paper. The author starts by defining the ring of formal power series over a field, then he introduces some operations on it such as compositions, derivations and exponentiations of power series. Then he establishes some theorems such as binomial theorems of Newton and Gauss, Jacobi's triple product identity, Euler's pentagonal number theorem and Rogers-Ramanujan identities. Many applications are obtained such as Ramanujan's partitions cogruences, Stirling numbers, permutations, the Lagrange-Jacobi four-square theorem and Puiseux theorem on the algebraic closure. He ends by entering the multivariate power series and its numerous applications.
