This paper concerns the boundary value problem \(-\Delta u= \lambda f(u)\) in \(\Omega\), \(u=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\), where \(\Omega= \{x\in \mathbb{R}^n: R<|x|<1\}\) and \(f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) is analytic and satisfies certain growth conditions. It is shown that for almost all \(R\in(0,1)\) there exists an analytic branch \((u_\theta, \lambda_\theta)\), \(\theta\in [0,\infty)\) of radial solutions with \(u_0=0\), \(\lambda_0=0\) and \(u_\theta(x) \to\infty\) for \(\theta\to \infty\) such that the following holds: There are \(u_0\) radial bifurcations. But there is an infinite number of symmetry breaking bifurcations such that the corresponding connected components of nonradial solutions are unbounded. In the proofs there is used a degree for \(S^1\)-equivariant orthogonal maps, introduced by the author in [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 23, No. 1, 83-102 (1994; Zbl 0815.58027)].
