The paper is a first in a series of papers in which the continuous coagulation and multiple-fragmentation equation is studied. Here, the pure fragmentation equation for time independent kernel of fragmentation is investigated. The particles may split into only two pieces (binary fragmentation equation) or into more than two pieces (multiple-fragmentation equation). The equation which models the process is transformed into an evolution equation in an appropriate class of functions \(X\), and by using the theory of semigroups of linear operators it is proved that there exists a unique nonnegative solution. The solution is found by using an approximating process. Conservation of mass is also established.
