A certain topological problem of Gauss
Let us consider a plane curve with a finite number of points of intersection with only double intersections and coming back to its beginning. Gauss had remarked that, starting from any knot and coming there back, the number of knots we meet is always even [\textit{G. F. Gauss}, Werke, Vol. 4, 271-285 (1900), see also Reprint Georg Olms Verlag Hildesheim (1976; Zbl 0516.01022)]. The author discusses the problem and its history, recalling also relatively new papers concerning the problem. The paper was presented during XIV School of History of Mathematics organized by the Commision for History of Mathematics (Polish Mathematical Society) in Zielona Góra.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0964.00033].
