A class of generalized chord Minkowski problems

From MaRDI portal

For a convex body \(K\subset{\mathbb R}^n\) and for a function \(f:[0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)\) with suitable properties, the author defines \N\[\NI_f(K)= \int_K\int_K f(|x-y|^2)\,dx\,dy, \quad \widetilde V_f(K,z)=\int_K f(|x-z|^2)\,dx\N\]\Nfor \(z\in K\) and \N\[\NF_f(K,\eta)= 2\int_{\nu_K^{-1}(\eta)} \widetilde V_f(K,z)\,d{\mathcal H}^{n-1}(z)\N\]\Nfor Borel sets \(\eta\) in the unit sphere \(S^{n-1}\), where \(\nu_K\) is the Gauss map of \(K\) and \({\mathcal H}^{n-1}\) is the \((n-1)\)-dimensional Hausdorff measure. The functional \(I_f\) and the measure \(F_f(K,\cdot)\) are translation invariant and (under the assumptions for \(f\)) finite, and for \(f(t)=t^{-\frac{n-q+1}{2}}\) with \(q\in{\mathbb R}\) they reduce essentially to the chord power integrals of integral geometry and the chord measures introduced by \textit{E. Lutwak} et al. [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 77, No. 7, 3277--3330 (2024; Zbl 1566.52005)]. Generalizing this work, the main results are a variational formula, showing that \(F_f(K,\cdot)\) can be interpreted as a derivative measure (here called differential) of \(I_f\) under suitable perturbations of the argument, and a Minkowski type existence theorem. The latter reads as follows. Let \(q>1\) and \(0<\alpha <\frac{1}{n+q-1}\) . Suppose that \(f\) is continuous and satisfies \(e^{-\frac{t}{2}}t^{-\frac{n-q+1}{2}} \le f(t) \le t^{-\frac{n-q+1}{2}}\) for \(t>0\). Let \(\mu\) be a non-zero finite even Borel measure on \(S^{n-1}\), which is not concentrated on any closed hemisphere. Then there exists an \(o\)-symmetric convex body \(K_0\) such that \(\mu= I_f(K_0)^{\alpha-1}F_f(K_0,\cdot)\). Thus, the Minkowski existence problem (for \(o\)-symmetric bodies) is only solved up to a factor, as in several other cases where homogeneity is missing. Uniqueness is not investigated. The proof of the existence result uses a variational argument, which requires more effort than in comparable cases.
