A combinatorial structure for many hierarchically hyperbolic spaces
The paper studies a converse to the combinatorial criterion for hierarchical hyperbolicity. Starting from a hierarchically hyperbolic space \((Z,\mathfrak S)\) satisfying additional assumptions, the authors construct a combinatorial HHS \((X,\mathcal W)\) such that the graph \(\mathcal W\) is quasi-isometric to \(Z\). The hypotheses highlighted in the introduction are weak wedges, clean containers, the orthogonals for nonsplit domains property and dense product regions.\N\NA second main result gives a genuine equivalence: \((Z,\mathfrak S)\) has wedges, clean containers and the strong orthogonal property if and only if there exists a combinatorial HHS \((X,\mathcal W)\) with simplicial wedges and simplicial containers such that \(\mathcal W\) is quasi-isometric to \(Z\). In this way the paper clarifies the relation between hierarchically hyperbolic structures and their combinatorial counterparts and it also emphasizes connections with lattice-theoretic notions.\N\NThe paper further applies the construction to mapping class groups of finite-type orientable surfaces. It is shown that \(\mathrm{MCG}(S)\) admits a combinatorial HHS structure whose underlying graph is a blow-up of the curve graph of \(S\), obtained by replacing each curve with the cone on its annular curve graph and also a different combinatorial HHS structure with simplicial wedges and simplicial containers.
