A Galerkin approximation is presented for the numerical discretization of the Stokes problem in two dimensions. A finite element/polynomial mixed approach is then proposed using finite elements for the velocity and a spectral method for pressure. In comparison with grad-div stabilized methods the numerical results show that for a large external force a higher accuracy can be obtained while increasing the efficiency of the iterative solver of the linear system.
