A four-dimensional peabody of constant width
This article concerns the construction of a 4-dimensional body of constant width based on the concept of focal conics.\N\NIn a previous article, the authors constructed a family of 3-dimensional bodies of constant width. Inspired by the same ideas and techniques, they construct here a 4-dimensional body of constant width. However, they do not obtain a family but a single body.\N\NIn the first two sections, they present the tools they need: focal conics, focal quadrics (which is a natural extension of the previous concept), elliptic and hyperbolic Steiner chains of 4-balls. Then, an analytical study and the use of the previous tools allows them to obtain two 3-dimensional submanifolds of \(\mathbb{R}^4\) ``opposite in the sense that the property of constant width is achieved when they are together. In the last two sections, they explain how to properly glue these two submanifolds together and demonstrate the constant width property.
