A remark on finitely generated subgroups of free groups

From MaRDI portal

The aim of the article under review is to prove the following result. Theorem 1. Let \(H\) be a finitely generated subgroup of a free group \(F\) and the index \([F:H]\) is infinite. Then there exists a nontrivial normal subgroup \(N\) of \(F\) such that \(N\cap H=1\). In particular, this theorem provides a partial solution to the problem of \textit{P. Neumann} [V. D. Mazurov and E. I. Khukhro, eds., Unsolved Problems in Group theory: The Kourovka Notebook, 4th edition, Institute of Mathematics, Novosibirsk, Russia (1973; Zbl 0401.20001), Problem 4.45]: Is it possible that the free product \(A*_{H=K}B\) with amalgamation, where \(A\), \(B\) are free groups of finite ranks, \(H\), \(K\) are finitely generated subgroups of \(A\), \(B\), respectively, is a simple group? It follows from this theorem that this product is not simple provided either of the indexes \([A:H]\), \([B:K]\) is infinite. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0931.00032].
