Absolutely continuous spectrum of perturbed Stark operators

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We prove new results on the stability of the absolutely continuous spectrum for perturbed Stark operators with decaying or satisfying certain smoothness assumption perturbation. We show that the absolutely continuous spectrum of the Stark operator is stable if the perturbing potential decays at the rate (1+x)−frac13−epsilon or if it is continuously differentiable with derivative from the H"older space Calpha(R), with any alpha>0.

The author considers the operator \(-d^2/dx^2-x+q(x)\) on the whole line, and assumes \(|q(x)|\leq C(1+|x|)^{-1/3-\varepsilon}\), with \(\varepsilon > 0\). The main results are: (1) The absolutely continuous spectrum fills the whole axis. (2) This also holds if \(q\) and \(q'\) are bounded, and the latter is uniformly Hölder continuous. (3) In the first case, one can also give a set on which embedded singular spectrum cannot exist. The method consists in applying results by \textit{D. J. Gilbert} and \textit{D. B. Pearson} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 128, 30-56 (1987; Zbl 0666.34023)], on the relation between subordinate solutions to the eigenvalue problem and the absolutely continuous part of the spectrum. The results improve in particular those of \textit{J. Walter} [Math. Z. 129, 83-94 (1972; Zbl 0252.47043)], on \(C^2\) potentials. The author mentions that J. Sahbani gives a slightly strengthened form of (3) in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 211, No.~2, 481-497 (1997; Zbl 0898.47040)].
