Adaptive algebraic optimized Schwarz methods

This interesting paper studies adaptive algebraic optimized Schwartz methods in the context of Krylov subspace and iterative methods. It is known that typically one subdivides the domain of interest into subdomains and then one solves the resulting subproblems repeatedly and iteratively to solve the global problem. An important procedure in this iterative process is the transmission of information between the subdomains. This is done for example using boundary conditions that apply on the interface between subdomains and one of the simplest transmission conditions are Dirichlet conditions. One important point about using this method is that there must be minimal overlap between the subdomains which can be suboptimal.\N\NIn this regard, optimized Schwarz methods use Fourier analysis to find transmission conditions between subdomains that provide faster convergence over standard Schwarz methods. This process may again not be optimal given the complicated analysis of the underlying Fourier operator.\N\NIn this paper, the authors present a method for adaptively optimizing transmission conditions. These methods are shown to be part of the Krylov subspace family of methods. Examples show the effectiveness of their methods and are included.\N\NThe paper is well written with a good set of references.
