Almost special representations of Weyl groups
Let \(W\) be a Weyl group and let \(\mathcal C\) be a family of irreducible representations over \(\mathbb{C}\) corresponding to a two-sided cell. The paper introduces a distinguished subset \(\mathcal A_{\mathcal C}\subset\mathcal C\), called the set of almost special representations, which contains the special representation and is shown to be in canonical bijection with the set of constructible representations attached to \(\mathcal C\).\N\NThe construction builds on the description of cells via finite groups associated to \(\mathcal C\) and on bases of spaces of class functions developed in earlier work of the author. For classical types, the correspondence is made explicit through a detailed combinatorial analysis involving families of intervals, tableaux and symbols. Exceptional types are treated by a case-by-case verification based on known tables.
